  • CA Certificate authority - issues digital certificates for use by other parties. See: http://ca.austriangridca.at/
  • CoG Commodity Grid Kit(s) - provide access to Grid services through a particular framework (e.g.: Java, Python, Perl). See http://www-unix.globus.org/toolkit/cog.html.
  • Condor Condor High Throughput Computing - Project to develop, implement, deploy, and evaluate mechanisms and policies that support HTC on large collections of distributively owned computing resources. See http://www.cs.wisc.edu/condor/.
  • CRL Certificate revocation list - a list of certificates which have been revoked, are no longer valid, and should not be relied upon.

G

  • Ganglia Ganglia Monitoring System - Ganglia is a scalable, distributed monitoring system for high-performance computing systems such as clusters and grids. See http://ganglia.sourceforge.net/.
  • GASS Global Access to Secondary Storage - Simplifies the porting and running of applications that use file I/O to the Globus environment.
  • GIIS Grid Index Information Service - Describes a class of servers, by gathering information from GRIS servers.
  • GIP Generic Information Provider - A highly configurable information provider that makes a separation between static and dynamic information. In the Austrian Grid used to show the available resources, and their supported VOs. See http://agrid.uibk.ac.at/austriangrid/mds.php.
  • gLite gLite Lightweight Middleware for Grid Computing - Middleware that may replace the GT in the Austrian Grid in the future. See http://www.glite.org
  • Glue Schema GLUE Information Model - Collaboration effort with the aim to define an information model and mapping to concrete schemas for representing Grid resources. See http://infnforge.cnaf.infn.it/glueinfomodel/.
  • GRAM Globus Resource Allocation Manager - Connects to local resource management systems (e.g. OpenPBS, TORQUE, Condor, Fork)
  • GRIS Grid Resource Information Service - Supplies information about a specific resource.
  • GSI Grid Security Infrastructure - Secure authentification and communication between grid entities.
  • GT4 Globus Toolkit Version 4 - Middleware to integrate grid services. See: http://www.globus.org/toolkit
  • GUMS Grid User Management System - Grid Identity Mapping Service. Used to dynamically create/change the gridmap-file. See http://grid.racf.bnl.gov/GUMS/

L

  • LCG LHC Computing Grid - The mission of the LCG is to build and maintain a data storage and analysis infrastructure for the entire high energy physics community that will use the LHC.
  • LDAP Lightweight Directory Access Protocol - A directory service.
  • LDIF LDAP Data Interchange Format - Format to represent LDAP entries in a simple text format.
  • LHC Large Hadron Collider - The LHC, currently being built at CERN near Geneva, is the largest scientific instrument on the planet. See http://lcg.web.cern.ch/LCG/.
  • LSF Load Sharing Facility - General purpose distributed queueing system from Platform Computing Corporation (http://www.platform.com) that unites a cluster of computers into a single virtual system to make better use of the resources on the network. See http://accl.grc.nasa.gov/lsf/.

M

  • MDS Metacomputing Directory Service - Publishes information about the grid (e.g. free CPUs).
  • MPI Message Passing Interface - A computer communications protocol and a library of routines that can be called from Fortran, C, C++ and Ada programs.
  • MyProxy MyProxy Credential Management Service - Software for managing X.509 PKI security credentials (certificates and private keys). See http://grid.ncsa.uiuc.edu/myproxy/.

N

O

  • OGSA Open Grid Services Architecture - The OGSA represents an evolution towards a Grid system architecture based on Web services concepts and technologies. See http://www.globus.org/alliance/publications/papers/ogsa.pdf.
  • OGSA-DAI Open Grid Services Architecture - Data Access and Integration - Framework that enables existing data resources, such as relational and XML databases, to be integrated into a grid environment. See http://www.ogsadai.org. OGSA-DAI has three major interfaces:
    • GDSR Grid Data Service Registry - Enables applications to dynamically locate databases they are interested in.
    • GDSF Grid Data Service Factory - Enables the creation of Grid Data Services to access and update databases.
    • GDS Grid Data Service - Enables Databases to be accessed through the grid infrastructure.
  • OGSA-DQP Open Grid Services Architecture - Distributed Query Processor - An extension of OGSA-DAI that provides a service-based distributed query processor, supporting the evaluation of queries over collections of potentially remote relational data services. See http://www.ogsadai.org.

Q

R

  • RA Registration Authority - Mediator between user certificate requests and the Certificate authority. See: http://ca.austriangridca.at/ra.php
  • RSL Resource Specification Language - Common language to describe jobs and the resources required to run them.

S

  • SGE Sun Grid Engine - Provides enabling distributed resource management software for wide ranging requirements from compute farms to grid computing. See http://gridengine.sunsource.net/.
  • SOAP formerly: Simple Object Access Protocol - A protocol for exchanging XML-based messages over a computer network, normally using HTTP.

T

  • TORQUE TORQUE Resource Manager - Open source resource manager providing control over batch jobs and distributed compute nodes.

U

V

  • VO Virtual Organization - A VO is a group of individuals that have common access to grid resources. Resource providers usually grant access to their resources to one or more VOs. Hence, anyone who wants to use grid resources must be a member of at least one VO.
  • VOMS Virtual Organization Membership Service - Provides information on the user's relationship with her Virtual Organization: her groups, roles and capabilities. See http://hep-project-grid-scg.web.cern.ch/hep-project-grid-scg/voms.html.

W

  • WSRF Web Services Resource Framework - Specification that extends web services for grid applications by giving them the ability to retain state information while at the same time retaining statelessness (using resources). See http://www.globus.org/wsrf/.
